Tomorrow morning we will be driving down to New York City and will be watching the Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in Manhattan. We will also be checking out some other sites, and from the sounds of it I need to try a piece of Cheesecake from Junior’s Cheesecake. For those that know I am a huge Cheesecake fan. So far my top two pieces have been:

1. The Cave in Halifax, NS -
www.lacave.ns.ca - this place is literally a dungeon type environment.
2. Antigua, Guatemala.  (oh to find that picture on my laptop).

This year for my birthday, my wife bought me a big cheesecake for my birthday cake, rather then the typical birthday cake…..hmmm, good stuff.

We shall see how Jr’s measures up (Hat Tip: Don Ryan).

My mother is coming on the trip with the family as well, my Dad was supposed to, but he couldn’t get the time off work.  She has never been to NYC, so I am sure she will have a great time as well.

I should be posting some pictures to Flickr this week. We may try to check out Monk’s Diner (Seinfeld), but distance with the kids would be a problem likely.

September

As we are in the midst of a series in Catalyst, "At the Movies" which we reviewed the film, "An Inconvenient Truth", and we move into the "God is Green" speaking series, one of the changes that our family is making is buying our produce from local growers, as much as possible.

As we progress through the series,  I am going to highlight some of the changes we have been making in our lifestyle. As you can tell the first one is trying to buy from growers within a 100-mile radius of Ottawa.

The market that we have been going to, over the last month, is the Byward Market in downtown Ottawa, plus a small stand around the corner from our house.  There is a slight problem to buying local produce that I am not sure how we will get around (I would prefer not to have to buy grocery chain produce) and that is the market closes at the end of September.

To tell you the truth we have enjoyed going to these markets and picking the potatoes, berries, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions etc rather then the trucked in ones in the big chain store. My wife noticed that they are quite proud of the fact that this is local produce and most of the stands in the Byward market were displaying "no pesticides" used.  Even better.

We have made some great Greek salads with what we have got from the market and it tastes great, very fresh.

Next Saturday, we plan on checking out the Cumberland Village Farmer’s Market, which is half-way between Rockland and Ottawa.

[been awhile]

Posted In: Food/Cooking by reg

Been awhile since I posted on my cooking….I have been cooking…just not new items on the family menu, with all the house showings no time to try too many new items (nearing 60 with no offer yet - yes pray for this house to sell)….tonight I tried the following from Rachael Ray’s Magazine

Pulled Chicken Sandwiches - absolutely delicious, if you like Swiss Chalet, you will like this one.  My daughter thought it was so good, so made me a badge to wear which said, “Dad is a good cook”. She is my princess!

[winterlude & spagetti]

Posted In: Family, Food/Cooking by reg

We had to be out of the house for a few hours this afternoon, so we went down to Winterlude. There were ice slides, labyrinth, tube slides, horse sleighs, tug of wars, snow sculptures, and a few displays of a tepee and wigwams. Tons of fun, and lots of people. I will post some pics in the next couple of days.

We are planning on getting out there again next Saturday.

Tonight, for the family dinner when we returned from Winterlude, my wife requested Cowboy Spaghetti again.  So we prepared dinner together…then we all filled our stomachs.

Here is the recipe …we have modified it somewhat, we do not use the pale beer, ground cumin, chicken stock, jalapenos, chili powder or hot sauce.  We add green or red pepper, celery, and mushrooms.

Today we dug the sign into the lawn and put the house on the market.  Now we have to get it sold.

This weekend I tried a very quick and easy recipe for dinner from Rachael Ray’s magazine.

Cheesesteaks - click here for the complete receipe.

I modified this one a bit….the store did not have the kind of steak we needed.  So we went with sliced roast beef from the deli….very good, and very easy and quick to make. I had been reusing the old recipes for a while now and needed something new,

Tomorrow, I should have the summary notes from this weekend’s Small Groups Weekend posted.  I had to polish the floor tonight and did not have the chance to complete.

Mark Batterson posted his New Year Manifesto for 2007 on his blog

Grab life by the mane. Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop criticizing and start creating. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Consider the lilacs. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Don’t let what’s wrong
with you keep you from worshipping what’s right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Laugh at yourself. Keep making mistakes. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don’t try to be who you’re not. Be yourself. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away. And remember: if God is for us who can be against us? Unleash the lion chaser within!

Last night for our family supper a new recipe from Rachael Ray’s Magazine , I made the following Drunken Risotto with Grilled Chicken. I substituted some of the ingredients such as 2 cups of Barolo Red Wine, instead used cooking wine (non alcohol), and didn’t use the mushrooms and chicken broth.  My daughter loved the rice, and everyone thought the chicken this way as very good.

Tonight, I made Panini sandwiches on my new Papa Panini Press that I bought from the Great Canadian Superstore today. I got the idea from the Panini Bar featured on the Rachael Ray Show .

The press worked like a charm.  Once each sandwich was made and placed on the press, it took about 2-3 minutes to cook.  Delicious.  These will be a regular item requested to be made I can be sure of that.
